How to Use an NFC Tag in a Job

This guide will walk you through how to use NFC tags in Operandio and embed them into a job to ensure compliance, track staff actions, and confirm that procedures are being followed correctly.

What is an NFC Tag and How It Applies to Operandio

An NFC tag is a small electronic device that uses Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to store and share information wirelessly with nearby devices, such as smartphones, when they are very close.

In a compliance or operational setting, NFC tags are a great way to ensure tasks are physically completed on-site. For example:

  • Place NFC tags at doors, equipment, or key areas around a venue.
  • Staff must physically go to the location and scan the tag to complete a step in the job.
  • This prevents staff from simply marking a task as complete without actually performing it.

Note: Staff will need an NFC-enabled device (like a smartphone) to complete these tasks.

Creating a Job Using Any NFC Tag

You can use multiple NFC tags throughout a venue for different steps in a job. Here’s how to set it up:

Step 1: Navigate to Job Manager

  • Open Operandio and go to Job Manager.
  • Select Create New Job.

Step 2: Add Steps to the Job

  • Click Add Step to build out your job.
  • Choose the appropriate response type for each step.

Step 3: Set Up an NFC Step

  • When ready to use an NFC tag, select the response type called “Scan NFC Touchpoint”.
  • Staff can now scan any NFC tag to complete that step while running the job.

Step 4: Complete Job Setup

  1. Finish building all job steps.
  2. Set the schedule, location, and assign the relevant area of work.

Creating a Job Using a Specific NFC Tag

If you want staff to scan a specific NFC tag to complete a task, follow these steps after completing Steps 1–3:

Step 1: Identify the NFC ID

  1. Schedule the job as an ad hoc job.
  2. Run the job and complete it.
  3. When you reach the step requiring the NFC tag, scan the tag you want to assign.
  4. The NFC ID will display on the step—copy this ID.

Note: You only need to do this once.

Step 2: Assign the NFC ID to the Job Step

  1. Navigate back to Job Manager and edit the job with the NFC response type.
  2. In the relevant step (e.g., “Check Back Door is Locked”), select Add NFC ID and paste the ID you copied.
  3. This ensures employees can only scan the specific NFC tag to complete the step.

Benefits of Using Specific NFC Tags

Using specific NFC tags can ensure certain tasks are physically completed at the correct location, such as:

  • Verifying doors are locked
  • Confirming safety checks
  • Completing compliance-critical procedures

Once set up, staff can scan the NFC tags using their device, and the system will automatically record the response, ensuring the task has been completed correctly and accurately.
